dLocal joins forces with Google to help define Agent Payments Protocol (AP2): the open standard for AI‑agent payments

dLocal is collaborating with Google on the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), an open standard that secures agent‑led payments across cards, bank transfers, and digital assets—advancing AI‑first commerce with verifiable intent, privacy, and interoperability.
Building trusted, interoperable, AI‑first commerce across emerging markets
We’re excited to share that dLocal is collaborating with Google on the new Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), an open, interoperable standard designed to make AI‑agent‑led transactions secure, auditable, and seamless across ecosystems. This milestone aligns with our AI‑first vision for global commerce and our commitment to simplifying payments in the most dynamic emerging markets.
What Google announced and why it matters
Google introduced the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) as an open protocol to securely initiate and transact agent‑led payments across platforms. AP2 is designed to prevent fragmentation by providing a common language that merchants, payment providers, and AI platforms can trust—while preserving user control and privacy.
AP2 builds on adjacent open standards, working as an extension to both Agent2Agent (A2A) and Model Context Protocol (MCP), so developers can compose agentic experiences end‑to‑end with interoperable building blocks. It supports a range of payment types, including cards, real‑time bank transfers, and stablecoins, ensuring flexibility as commerce evolves.
Built on long‑standing Google collaboration
Our collaboration with Google builds on multi‑year work together that has helped merchants increase conversion in emerging markets, including support for Google Pay across Latin America, APAC, and the Middle East & Africa.
We’ve also enabled Google Play users in Kenya to pay with Airtel Mobile Money, expanding local payment choice and access for millions.
This track record spans multiple regions across Africa, Asia, and Latin America—reinforcing our shared commitment to reliable, locally relevant payment experiences at global scale.
Why this matters for dLocal customers
At dLocal, our mission is to make the complex simple across emerging markets where payments span cards, local methods, wallets, and digital currencies. AP2’s openness and rigor complement our AI‑first approach to:
- Create a consistent trust layer across varied payment methods and regulatory contexts, boosting conversion and reducing risk for merchants.
- Unlock new AI‑native experiences (e.g., delegated purchasing and multi‑agent coordination) without adding proprietary lock‑in.
- Bridge traditional rails and programmable money, enabling agent‑led payments where appropriate.
In our CEO’s words
“In the dynamic emerging markets we serve, payments are fragmented and complex, from cards to local payment methods, to wallets and stablecoins. Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) turns that complexity into a single, interoperable framework, enabling agent‑initiated payments that are safe, seamless, and designed to boost merchant conversion while keeping users in control.” — Pedro Arnt, CEO, dLocal
What’s next
- We’ll continue collaborating with Google and the broader ecosystem to shape AP2’s evolution and developer tooling as agentic commerce scales.
- We’ll work with select merchants and partners on early AI‑agent payment experiences that prioritize safety, conversion, and customer control.
- Developers can explore the AP2 specification and samples to start building interoperable agent flows today.
